Fredric Douglas by Samuel J Miller 1847-1852
Who was Fredric Douglass?
Fredric Douglass was an escaped slave who fought for the abolishment of slavery. He became a national leader of the abolition movement in New York and Maryland. He also wrote books about anti-slavery.
What is a Daguerreotype?
Daguerreotype was the first photographic process to which meant photographs were available to ordinary people.
It used a copper silvered plate which was exposed for 5 - 60 seconds.
Why might Douglass have wanted portraits to be made of himself?
I think he would have wanted portraits to be made of himself because "photography was the perfect tool for him to rewrite racial prejudice"
When I look at the pictures of Fredric Douglass I wonder why he is not smiling in any of the pictures, what is the story behind the fact he never smiles.

1) (A) Who is Omar Victor Diop?
Omar Victor Diop is a self taught photographer from Senegal. He was born in 1980 and currently 40 years old and lives and works in his home city of Dakar. He practices fine art and occasionally portraiture.
(B) The dictionary definition of Diaspora is the spread of people from their original homeland.
(C) Omar could have made self portraits disguised as Fredrick Douglas because Fredrick was a very well respected man who many people (probably including Omar) looked up to him and maybe Omar wanted to carry on his legacy through photography.
3) I find the background interesting because of the way it blends in with his suit and tie. I also fund the fact he has a whistle interesting as it is bright yellow and quite 'outlandish'
4) I think the picture is round because that's the style he wanted the picture in because its meant to be a portrait. That could have been the way portraits could have been at the time of Fredrick Douglass.

I chose to talk about this picture because there are lots of things that intrigue me. For example why did he choose to put football boots in the image - was it to 'modernize the image. It's not only this picture with football, it seems to be a recurring theme. The way the football boots blend in with the colours is quite interesting.
